R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) has an opening for a knowledgeable, result-driven and enthusiastic Project Manager / Senior Transportation Design Engineer with a minimum of 8 years of experience to join our expanding transportation team. This position will work out of one of our Greater Toronto Area (GTA) offices such as: Mississauga, Hamilton or Guelph.

As a member of our Transportation Group, you will work under the direction of a Vice President of Transportation Design GTA on a variety of road design projects from feasibility studies through construction for both public and private sector clients.

The team specializes in road design and environmental assessments across a wide geographic area. Our projects vary in scope, from small road enhancements to large-scale regional road improvements and other transportation infrastructure, including roundabouts, Active Transportation, and Complete Streets engineering. We support our clients throughout the entire project lifecycle, from concept to completion.

Working closely with the Vice President of Transportation Design – GTA, you will play a key role in advancing our public sector transportation design practice. This position involves managing a variety of transportation infrastructure projects, including roads, highways, and trails for public sector clients, as well as supporting major road designs for private sector clients.

The Role

Reporting to the Vice President, Transportation Design – GTA, this position will be responsible for proposal preparation, project management and delivery of projects, working with and leading a team of professionals (engineers, technologists and technicians) in the following service areas:

  • Road, highway and multi-use trail detail design;
  • Active Transportation and Complete Streets detail design;
  • Transportation Class Environmental Assessment studies;
  • Project tender preparation and construction administration;
  • Traffic management plans for construction;
  • Project feasibility, utility management and cost estimates;
  • Constructability reviews, and
  • Design standards reviews.

As a Project Manager within the organization, you will have responsibilities that include the following:

  • Establishing appropriate scope, budget and timelines for deliverables; and work with teams, throughout the Burnside offices, to implement project delivery;
  • Prepare and seal transportation designs and technical reports;
  • Provide client management for projects;
  • Managing project performance, including staff utilization, profitability and accounts receivable;
  • Ensure quality and timely delivery of project deliverables to meet the clients’ needs;
  • Provide technical mentorship to transportation designers, engineers and technical staff and participate actively and formally in their development plans;
  • Provide technical advice to other service sectors and teams;
  • Assist in client development and prepare proposals; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Professional Knowledge & Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a transportation professional with a minimum of 8 years of experience with the following qualifications, experience and skills:

  • A registered professional engineer in Ontario, or eligible to be licensed in Ontario;
  • Experience as a project manager for transportation design projects, including class environmental assessment studies, detail designs and contract administration;
  • Expertise in transportation design applications including AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation Inroads;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal / team player, organizational and analytical skills;
  • Experience mentoring staff;
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite of programs;
  • Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects concurrently; and
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license and vehicle.
