Who You Are
Our Data Estate team powers insights, automation, and smarter decisions across the business—driving the intelligence behind our next-generation platform. We’re looking for a Data Engineer who can not only build scalable pipelines and products but also lay the foundation of our data engineering practice. You’ll help define structure, frameworks, and best practices so that as our data estate grows, it remains resilient, governed, and ready for advanced use cases—including AI-powered solutions.
What You’ll Do
- Architect and build scalable, resilient data pipelines using Databricks, Azure Data Factory, and SQL-based tools.
- Design and implement pipelines following the medallion architecture (bronze, silver, gold) to ensure consistency, scalability, and quality across layers.
- Help establish and enforce foundational practices for data modeling, governance, and quality to ensure long-term scalability.
- Introduce and enforce data quality and lineage frameworks (e.g., Delta expectations, cataloging, monitoring).
- Act as a technical authority: drive standards, perform reviews, and ensure consistency across solutions.
- Develop and deploy Python-based solutions that support data processing, APIs, and service integration.
- Design and implement integrations with internal and third-party platforms via REST APIs and web services.
- Partner with developers, analysts, and business stakeholders to deliver solutions that meet evolving needs.
- Optimize pipeline performance and cost efficiency through partitioning, caching, and cluster configuration.
- Lead improvements to observability, testing, and monitoring across the data ecosystem.
- Contribute to building a scalable data engineering practice capable of supporting advanced analytics and AI/ML initiatives.
What You Bring
- 8+ years of experience in data engineering, backend development, or a related technical role.
- Proven experience designing and scaling cloud-native data architecture (Microsoft Azure preferred).
- Hands-on experience applying the medallion architecture in a Databricks/Azure environment.
- Advanced proficiency in Databricks (Delta Lake, Spark, workflows, notebooks).
- Strong Python development skills for data transformation and APIs.
- Solid understanding of data modeling, warehousing, and performance optimization.
- Strong grasp of both batch and streaming data patterns, and when to apply each.
- Experience implementing data quality frameworks and observability tooling (e.g., Unity Catalog, Great Expectations, monitoring platforms).
- Familiarity with DevOps practices, Git, and CI/CD pipelines in a cloud environment.
- Experience introducing and operationalizing governance frameworks (security, privacy, data lineage).
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and contribute to a remote-first team.
Bonus Points For
- Experience with LangChain or other modern data/AI frameworks.
- Experience with Power BI or other BI tools.
- Familiarity with data privacy regulations (PIPEDA, GDPR, etc.).
You Might Be a Fit If You…
- Have a builder’s mindset—you know how to create structure where none exists.
- Enjoy solving complex problems and creating systems that scale.
- See iteration as a strength, not a sign of failure.
- Appreciate working with people from diverse backgrounds and geographies.
- Are excited to contribute to a culture of ownership, accountability, and experimentation.
Why This Role is Unique
This isn’t a plug-and-play engineering seat — it’s a chance to take a senior role in shaping Rival’s data estate. You’ll work closely with leadership, influence direction, and help build the foundations of a platform that will power AI, analytics, and decision-making across the business.
