Vertical Farm Technician

EW Pratt High School is located in the Town of High Prairie, which is at the junction of Highway 2 and Highway 749, within Big Lakes County.  High Prairie is approximately 371 kilometres northwest of Edmonton and 118 kilometres west of Slave Lake.

Position Summary

The Vertical Farm Technician is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of a school- or division-based vertical farm. This role supports sustainable food production by ensuring optimal growing conditions, harvesting produce, and supporting educational programming. The technician will work closely with staff, students, and community partners to grow fresh produce for school nutrition programs and learning initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

Planting, Maintenance, & Harvesting
  • Prepare growing trays, seed crops, and monitor germination
  • Ensure proper watering, nutrient levels, and lighting for optimal plant health
  • Manage crop schedules to ensure continuous harvest cycles
  • Harvest and prepare produce for delivery to kitchen or program partners
Farm Operations & Recordkeepin
  • Maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and organization in the farm environment
  • Monitor and record growing conditions, crop yields, and input usage
  • Report pest or disease issues promptly and help implement solutions
  • Track production data for school nutrition reporting and sustainability goal
Community & Educational Engagement
  • Support teachers and students with farm-based learning activities
  • Assist in hosting tours, workshops, and hands-on demonstrations
  • Help prepare educational materials and signage for learning environments

Maintenance & Equipment Oversight

  • Maintain grow lights, hydroponic/aeroponic systems, and farm automation tools
  • Monitor environmental controls (humidity, pH, temperature, water circulation)
  • Coordinate with vendors or facilities staff for equipment servicing

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (post-secondary or agriculture-related training preferred)
  • Experience with indoor agriculture, hydroponics, or greenhouse systems an asset
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise growing protocols
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with school staff and students
  • Passion for sustainability, food security, and education

Working Conditions

  • May involve lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, and standing for extended periods
  • Indoor environment with exposure to water, nutrients, and plant material
  • Flexible hours based on crop schedules and school needs
