What’s the role

Shell is seeking a PEI Engineer to join their Sarnia Manufacturing Centre Pressure Equipment Integrity Team.

The Sarnia Manufacturing Centre Pressure Equipment Integrity (PEI) team is a group of Engineers, Inspectors, Specialists, and Analysts who work together to ensure the safe and reliable condition of site fixed assets.  Key stakeholders for the PEI Team are site Production, Maintenance, Reliability and Technical disciplines who rely on the PEI Team to monitor equipment, proactively mitigate and develop detailed repair scopes to prevent Loss of Primary Containment from site pressure vessels and piping.

Reporting to the Pressure Equipment Integrity Manager, the PEI Engineer is responsible for providing mechanical engineering and technical integrity functions related to the design, repair, and alteration of piping, pressure vessels, tanks, and boilers at the Sarnia Refinery and Chemical Plant.

The PEI Engineer provides technical support to PEI, Operations and Maintenance on day-to-day plant issues and during plant operational upsets or outages.  The PEI Engineer is required to provide support to the site in aspects of Design Operating Window (DOW) monitoring, Management of Change and Project reviews, Fitness for Service analysis, repair plan endorsement and TSSA liaison.

Accountabilities:

  • Address day-to-day mechanical engineering concerns and requests

  • Lead or execute Fitness-for-Service assessments

  • Monitor operational exceedances as they relate to equipment design, communicate gaps, and lead resolution

  • Assist Unit Inspectors with Mechanical Engineering calculations, Engineered Clamp design reviews, repair proposal reviews, and code compliance

  • Provide input on long-term equipment replacement vs repair strategies

  • Ensure corporate and jurisdictional code, standard and Best Practice compliance

  • Develop and validate Asset Integrity initiatives, procedures, programs, and standards

  • Communicate Industry code and standard changes and perform gap assessments

  • Interface and network with other Shell locations and Subject Matter Experts

  • Interact with other industry Owner/Users on equipment integrity issues

  • Act as the primary liaison for SMC with the TSSA Engineering Group

What you bring:

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or another related field

  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario or equivalent certification preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Pressure Equipment, Asset Integrity or a related field within a petrochemical or similar industry

  • Deep understanding in jurisdictional and industry codes and standards such as NBIC, ASME, Ontario Boiler and/or Pressure Vessel Act

  • Experience with Risk Based Inspection (RBI) and Fitness for Service (FFS) methodologies

  • Familiarity with basic inspection techniques and Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) methods
