Paper Leaf is an award-winning digital product design firm located in Edmonton, AB. We design, develop, and consult on innovative custom web applications, mobile applications, and websites – and we are looking to add a full-time UX/UI Designer to join our team. We have a fast-paced and flexible environment that’s actually organized; a tight-knit team where your voice is heard; a variety of challenging, rewarding, and creative work; and a clear framework for professional development and growth. This is a remote-first position, open to applicants across Canada, with preference given to those within the MST time zone.

We design and consult on projects for clients across the globe, and you'll be working on a team that values high-quality execution, not one that is hellbent on burning you out and churning out as much work as possible. You can learn more about our work on the Portfolio page, our team on our About page, and get a good vibe of our culture from our Instagram feed. Sometimes mission statements are bogus, but we believe in ours: the thoughtful delivery of human-centred digital products and technology consulting.

Position

The UX/UI Designer role goes beyond surface-level design. You'll play a key role in shaping the strategy and execution of web and mobile projects (apps, web apps, and websites). From the early discovery phase through launch, you'll own and influence the full design process – wireframing, prototyping, workflow mapping, visual design, design systems, user testing, and client collaboration.

You'll work closely with:

  • The Design Director to align on priorities and career growth,
  • The Design Lead to maintain creative excellence across projects,
  • Project Managers to keep work on track and on budget, and
  • Developers to ensure design and development inform each other in real time.

This role is best suited for designers who are ready to bring experience, craft, and critical thinking to every stage of the process, and who thrive in a collaborative environment where their work has visible impact.

Are you the ideal candidate for this position? You are if you…

  • Find as much joy in untangling a complex problem as you do in crafting beautiful visual designs.
  • Champion the user experience, balancing user needs with client goals in every solution.
  • Obsess over details – a misaligned form field by 2 pixels doesn’t escape your eye.
  • Thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy working with different roles and personalities to create alignment.
  • Take ownership of your work and have a strong sense of responsibility, accountability, and organization.
  • Can take a deadline and work backwards to create an actionable plan to achieve it.
  • Step in to support teammates when needed.
  • Ask thoughtful questions and aren’t afraid to speak up to get clarity.

Required Skills

Job Duties

As a UX/UI designer you will be expected to:

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with content strategists, developers, project managers and clients.
  • Create user flows, wireframes, and prototypes.
  • Develop application interface designs for various clients (we work in Figma!) – layout, styling, file preparation for responsive web apps and websites.
  • Ensure design solutions are within project scope.
  • Lead user testing, user interviews and other quantitative and qualitative UX research.
  • Identify user needs and define acceptance criteria.
  • Participate in and present at client meetings.
  • Track time (it sucks, but it’s necessary).

Requirements:

To be considered for the position, here’s what you’ll have:

  • 3+ years UX/UI design experience, in an agency setting preferably.
  • Post-secondary education in design.
  • Experience using Figma.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Fonts).
  • A digital portfolio showcasing your UX/UI design work for websites, web apps, and/or mobile apps. Note: If you have live products or prototypes, we'd love to explore them, so please include links!
  • Strong verbal communication and people skills.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.

We are working hard to increase the diversity of our team wherever we can and we actively encourage everyone to consider becoming a part of it. If you don’t meet one or two of our requirements, but still feel you’d be a good fit, throw your hat in the mix anyway. You miss every shot you don’t take.

What We Offer

This is a full-time, salaried position. We offer a remote or hybrid working environment; flexible start and end times to your days; a compensation package that includes a competitive salary, retirement matching, benefits and vacation time; unlimited sick days; the opportunity to work on interesting, challenging, and meaningful projects; professional development opportunities; and more.

You will be provided with the technology and equipment necessary to do your job from home. If you crave an office environment, there are opportunities to hot-desk from the offices of ZGM Modern Marketing Partners, our parent company, in Edmonton and Calgary, AB.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

We believe that diversity in all regards contributes to a broader collective perspective that will consistently improve Paper Leaf and the work we do. We are working hard to increase the diversity of our team wherever we can and we actively encourage everyone to consider becoming a part of it. We have strong staff involvement in our DEI initiatives, establishing and advocating for progression of Paper Leaf’s processes. These efforts span from establishing equitable hiring practices to ensuring the products we deliver are setting standards for accessibility in our industry.
